Joys and sorrows of my day today... life and death...

First up - a baby girl made her way into the world first thing this morning!!! What a wonderful treasure to be part of!

Walking with someone throughout the day, knowing that as she got worse throughout the day, that she likely won't make it through the next day, even.  What difficult conversations...how do you ask someone to make that choice about life or death when the are yet so young!  Yet their body is so riddled with disease and illness.  The tragedy of personal choices that destroy both the body and the soul.

How does one sit with that knowledge that they may be facing the end?  How much do I say, and when?  How direct to be? We want to bring words of hope, but so often, they are oh so tempered with words of caution, words that speak of death.  How do you speak to one's soul in all of that?

Seeing faces of family of the one who died yesterday - their grief, yet their strength and their resolve!  One family member told me that she had been sober for "xxx" days - she was very proud of it!  And although she was so tempted to drink to cope with the grief of his passing, she wasn't going to allow that to destroy her resolve.  The joy to be able to encourage her on her journey to recovery!

The grief of so many other young people who are so entrenched in their addictions... and the absolute havoc it is wreaking on their lives!  Whether it is through a life of crime, or the physical toll on the body, or the emotional destruction and breaking of one's soul - and yet there, you see glimmers of hope - the ones who have yet again mustered the resolve to try to fight and seek a new life!  What beauty, again, to be able to walk alongside these, whom God loves dearly.

The joy of having an elderly man stop me in my tracks and ask me if I wanted to see his craftsmanship - what masterpieces!  He's a carver, and has carved beautiful ornate and elegant structures, whether elegant canoes, or child-sized rocking chairs or sleighs!  What a treat to delight in seeing those pieces, even if for a few minutes!

The humor of being told by a oh so kind nurse first thing in the morning that my top was on inside out!!  (I had taken off a flowing blouse overtop a tank top this am for the delivery, and when I put it on again it was inside out!)  Phew! Got that straightened out before getting to the office!

And now I'm home at 10:00 pm... anticipating more grief and sorrow yet to come through the night.

So grateful that at the end of the day, God holds all in his hands.  He loves dearly, cares dearly, so much more than I - we - ever could.

Thank you, Lord, for walking with me through the night and through the day.
